When we mention Cappadocia, we're talking about one of the most breathtaking scenic regions on the planet. Located in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, it's characterized by curious rock formations that offer a panoramic view that takes us to the Moon itself. It's so special that, since 1985, it's been included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Join us to discover more about this unique region where the Barceló Cappadocia Hotel is located.
Cappadocia is a region with thousands of years of history. It's situated about 500 miles from Istanbul. The easiest way to get there is by plane, a journey of just over an hour from the city. Its iconic countryside stretches for many hundreds of miles, but there are certain places that are a must-see.
The epicenter of Cappadocia's activity is in Göreme. Göreme National Park, also known as Göreme Open Air Museum, is located here. Its churches carved into the rock are the highlight of the area, as well as the so-called fairy chimneys, some of the most unique rock columns. From here you can easily reach several villages of Cappadocia and also enjoy several scenic hikes.
Other points of interest not to be missed during your visit are the different valleys of Cappadocia. One of the most remarkable is the Valley of the Pigeons, which you can reach by taking a 3 mile walk from Göreme and which ends at the fascinating Uçhisar Castle. Also worth visiting are the Valley of the Monks, the Valley of Imagination, and the Valley of Love.
If there's something that identifies this area it's the typical image of dozens of hot air balloons flying over this incredible landscape of rock formations, each one more peculiar than the next. One of the most unforgettable experiences to be had in Cappadocia is to ascend to the Turkish sky at dawn and watch the first rays of the sun from a hot air balloon.
And from the heavens we descend to the depths of the Earth, because one cannot leave Cappadocia without visiting one of its subterranean cities. Derinkuyu, Kaymakli and Ozkonak are some of the main ones, each with their unique characteristics, making them special places to visit while visiting this earthly paradise.
