Travel lovers will be dazzled by Cozumel, for its fine sandy beaches, the crystal-clear sea and the hectares of virgin landscapes, on this Caribbean island near the Yucatan Peninsula. However, this is just a taste of its attraction; the most amazing sights are under the sea. This small island has 39 first class diving areas, so the best holidays in Cozumel include this type of activity.
Don't worry if you don’t have diving experience, as there are activities for all levels, including those for professional divers, and those for people just starting to use a snorkel. Most of the best diving areas can be easily accessed from the hotels on Cozumel, and many visitors opt for a guide when diving. There are dozens of areas from which to choose, and one of the best is the Palancar Reef; both beginners and expert divers can see magnificent coral formations, as well as a kaleidoscope of marine life, including starfish, eels, turtles, and if you are lucky, a nurse shark. This reef has four sections, including the famous Palancar Caves, where experienced divers can swim through coral tunnels, surrounded by shoals of bright, colourful fish.
Snorkellers can float in shallow areas, over the Palancar Gardens, while beaches such as Sunset, Dzu Hal and Corona Beach also offer excellent and accessible diving. Each location offers a unique view of the marvels of marine life.
But there is not only diving; beach lovers will also be delighted by Cozumel and its beaches with palm trees, bright blue water and gentle waves that invite you to swim and relax near the hotels of Cozumel. For more water fun, a short trip in a taxi takes you to the private Paradise Beach club, one of the most appreciated attractions on Cozumel. The entrance fee gives you access to a swimming pool with all the facilities and enormous fun inflatables. Children in particularly will be delighted by jumping and sliding on these structures. Of course, in the meantime you can try the flavoursome Mexican food, as well as tasty drinks.
Although water activities capture most of the attention on Cozumel, there are also impressive tourist sites in the interior of the island. The island houses 24 Mayan ruins, where history lovers can transport themselves to other eras. One of the best examples is the Ixchel sanctuary (Ixchel was a goddess in Mayan mythology). This temple pays homage to the fertility goddess and attracted thousands of worshippers during the Mayan era. Visitors today are following a century-old Cozumel tradition.
